Newly emerged adults were exposed to various concentrations of boric acid incorporated into the diet. Results showed that treated insects exhibited toxic symptoms with a dose-dependent mortality. Histological study of midgut revealed alterations in the epithelial cells and a signiWcant increase in the epithelium thickness. Social Wasps (Vespinae) in Urban Gardens and Woods

Global change, including urbanization, affects species ecology. Social wasps (Vespinae) are ubiquitous in urban areas, which increases their encounters with humans. We studied social wasps in urban gardens and nearby urban woods in central Finland, using beer traps. Social wasps were common in gardens and woods, and overall wasp abundance was higher in the woods. Also, the most abundant and frequent species Vespula vulgaris was more abundant in the woods than in the gardens. Variation in the overall abundance and the abundance of V. vulgaris was great among trap locations, which likely results from wasps’ social nesting habits. The entire textual transmission of a late ninth-century poem, the Bella Parisiacae urbis by Abbo of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, is indissolubly tied with glosses and glossaries. The peculiarity of its composition as well as its large circulation makes this poem a perfect case study for the role and development of medieval glossography. L’agiografia è un potente veicolo di propaganda e i testi agiografici medievali forniscono una chiave di lettura anche riguardo ai temi dell’etnia e dell’identità dei popoli germanici. Per quanto riguarda il mondo germanico riveste particolare rilievo il culto di quei santi che appaiono più strettamente legati alle formazioni politiche che vanno emergendo in Europa occidentale. Si tratta di culti sostenuti dalle autorità non solo ecclesiastiche ma anche e soprattutto civili, dai sovrani e dai loro entourage.
